So You Want to be a Visualization & Analytics Consultant? Here’s the Tableau Desktop Technical Know-How You’ll Need
Last week I kicked off a series about what it takes to be a Data Visualization & Analytics Consultant specializing in Tableau. (If you missed it, the story is available here). It represents a culmination of skills I’ve outlined (through my many years of experience in the field) and provides a foundation of how you can map your own knowledge and skills against it.
In this story, I’m going to start to drill down into the largest section (and arguably the one you care the most about), Technical Skill. I previously defined this as your ability to use different elements of software to complete objectives. So today I’m going to explain many of the nitty gritty components.
Above is a zoomed in look at the Technical Skill tree. Out of the gate, I’ll say it is unrealistic that you would be at an expert level in all of these areas. It’s functionally not possible, there is too much depth down each one to maintain mastery, due in large part to ever-changing technology and nonstop improvements and features being implemented. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not spent much time in the field or hasn’t truly held a role where depth is required.
